BERLIN, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Dortmund beat FC Zenit 2-0 and recorded its first win on second-half goals from Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland in the second round of Group F in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
The "BVB" took the reins from the starting whistle but needed 15 minutes to create its first noteworthy chance, as Giovanni Reyna missed the target from close range.
Zenit's defense was well-positioned and gave Dortmund no space to develop its fast-paced style of play.
As a result, Dortmund's next chance came with a set piece when Marco Reus unleashed a dangerous free kick on target at the half hour mark.
Lucien Favre's men tried to turn up the pressure but neither Reus nor Haaland was able to break the deadlock before the break.
After the interval, the momentum on the pitch remained the same. Dortmund was the more active team with Haaland coming close again inside the box in the 47th minute. Meanwhile, Zenit showed no interest to increase its offensive efforts.
The hosts eventually opened the scoring with assistance from Zenit's defender Vyacheslav Karavaev, who brought down Thorgan Hazard inside the box to concede a penalty in the 77th minute.
Jadon Sancho stepped up and kept his nerves after sending Zenit goalkeeper Mikhail Kerzhakov the wrong way.
Dortmund sealed the deal in injury time when Haaland capitalized on Jude Bellingham's flicked on cross before beating Kerzhakov following a one-on-one.
With the result, SS Lazio tops Group F followed by Club Brugge, Borussia Dortmund and FC Zenit. Enditem
