WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- The curtain has been pulled for the 2020 U.S. presidential election, which will see American voters decide on Tuesday whether incumbent President Donald Trump will remain in the White House for another four years.

This election year has been largely defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused 231,003 deaths in the United States so far, the greatest fatality tally in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University.

This year's White House race is between Republican presidential candidate Trump, the incumbent, and Democrat Joe Biden, former vice president of the United States.

Following are basic facts about the two candidates.

-- Trump, 74, the 45th U.S. president:

Trump's presidential campaign in 2016 was held under the banner of the so-called "America First" policy, claiming he would "Make America Great Again."

As a businessman and television celebrity before entering politics, Trump defeated then Democratic presidential nominee and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

This year, promising to "Keep America Great," Trump's campaign has put priority on jobs, eradicating COVID-19, healthcare, education, immigration, innovation and foreign policy, according to his campaign.

If re-elected, Trump vows to create 10 million new jobs in 10 months, develop a vaccine against the coronavirus by the end of this year, establish permanent manned presence on the Moon, and send the first manned mission to Mars.

The campaign also said Trump will continue to pursue an "America First" foreign policy.

Trump has said the United States is "doing very, very well" against the coronavirus.

-- Biden, 77, the 47th U.S. vice president (2009-2017, Obama administration):

Biden had served 36 years as U.S. senator for the state of Delaware before 2009. This is the third time Biden has run for the U.S. presidency.

On Oct. 28, he cast early ballot in his home state, telling reporters afterward that he is able to work with Republicans on improving the Affordable Care Act to give Americans better health care.

On the pandemic response, Biden said he will make COVID-19 vaccines free for all Americans if elected and has also laid out his plan, which includes consultation with governors of all 50 states during the presidential transition period, a national mask mandate in all federal buildings and on all interstate transportation, and an increase in daily testing reaching seven times today's level.

Biden has emphasized the "Scranton vs. Park Avenue" message to appeal to working-class voters, which points to his Pennsylvania boyhood home and Trump's adult life in Manhattan, New York City.

"This is our opportunity to build back better than ever," according to Biden's official campaign website, which promises to ensure the dignity of every American, a resilient and sustainable economy and a rebuilding of the middle class.
