LANZHOU, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- The United States pursues double standards upon anti-secessionism issues so that its own interest is achieved at other states' cost, said a report published by a Chinese university on Tuesday.

The report, titled "Between inside and outside, the Double Standard of the United States on Counter-Secessionism," was released by researchers with the Institute for Central Asia Studies and the Center for National Security Studies at Lanzhou University in northwest China.

Over the years, the international community has come to reach some consensus on opposing secession and safeguarding territorial and sovereign integrity. Yet the United States has been frequently exploiting human rights as an excuse to distort separatist issues in other countries and even to obstruct and undermine other states' anti-secession actions, the report said.

For many years, the United States has provided support to the separatist forces in China's Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang and Hong Kong, the report said. Since 2017, for instance, in collusion with different overseas separatists, the U.S. authorities have adopted so-called bills on these Chinese regions, it added.

Its purpose behind the facade is to take every opportunity to obstruct and undermine China's anti-secessionism struggle and contain China's peaceful development, it said.

Throughout history, the United States was also threatened by secessionism and once fought a four-year civil war to maintain the integrity of the Federation, the report said. Regrettably, the U.S. authority lacks empathy when it comes to the anti-secessionist efforts of other countries, and whether or not support the separatist forces in other countries depends entirely on the consideration of its own interest, according to the report.

In general, secessionism in other countries is merely a tool of Washington to maintain and achieve its strategic and geopolitical interests, the report said.

For an ally, the U.S. government usually supports the territorial integrity and the unification of the country and opposes its secessionism. In contrast, to the secessionism of its rival or adversary, the United States often utilizes the covers of ethnicity, religion, human rights, and freedom to back up the secession movement. In some cases, Washington even initiated military intervention directly to contain its rival or adversary, according to the report.

According to the report, the United States has been the biggest destroyer instead of a contributor to the contemporary international order, which is based on the charter of the United Nations. The United States will ultimately suffer from its opportunism and egoism on the secession issues, it said. Enditem
