JERUSALEM, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Israeli champion Maccabi Tel Aviv, who recently reached the Europa League's round of 32, announced on Wednesday the dismissal of its Greek coach Giorgos Donis.
Maccabi's decision follows disappointing results in the Israeli league, with only four wins out of 11 matches played so far this season.
This puts Maccabi only in fifth place, 11 points far from Maccabi Haifa that tops the league.
"The club would like to thank Giorgos and his assistants for their dedication since joining the club," Maccabi said in a statement.
The 51-year-old Donis, who earned 24 caps as a player in the Greek national team, signed as Maccabi Tel Aviv's head coach in August 2020, after coaching Panathinaikos for two seasons.
He replaced Vladimir Ivic, who coached Maccabi for two seasons, in which he led the club to two league championship titles.
The Serbian coach signed in the summer at the English Championship side Watford, from which he was sacked on Saturday. Enditem
