BUCHAREST, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Maia Sandu took the oath of office on Thursday, officially becoming the sixth president and also the first female president of Moldova.
"I kindly ask all of us to keep going together ... I have big plans for our country, but I can't make them on my own, I need your help," the new president called for support of citizens in her four-year presidency when delivering the first speech as president after her inauguration at the Palace of Republic, according to media reports.
Sandu mentioned that she will fight against corruption and for the success of Moldova, together with the citizens.
"I will be the president of European integration ... I will promote a foreign policy that will help domestic policy ... allow us new investments and jobs, open doors for our citizens, for our products, put our country at the table alongside developed countries," she said.
Sandu, running on the ticket of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), defeated Igor Dodon who was seeking re-election in the second round of presidential election on Nov. 15.
Sandu, 48, worked for the World Bank for two years after she graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2010. She was Moldova's education minister from 2012 to 2015 and prime minister from June to November 2019.
According to the Moldovan constitution, Sandu announced her resignation as PAS chairman and resigned from the party soon after she was elected president. Enditem
