HONG KONG, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Wednesday said it firmly supports the Hong Kong police's law enforcement action against those violating national security law in Hong Kong and also firmly supports the solemn statement of the HKSAR government to safeguard national security.
Fifty-three people including Benny Tai were arrested during a police operation on Wednesday for conspiring to carry out the "burn with us" strategy and "paralyze the HKSAR government," a spokesperson of the liaison office said.
Those people were suspected of committing the offense of subverting the state power under Article 22 of the national security law in Hong Kong, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said without national security, there will be no long-term prosperity and stability for Hong Kong.
The office supports Hong Kong police's action, which distinguished those conspiring to paralyze the HKSAR government from the general public who were misled to vote in the so-called "primaries," the spokesperson said.
The office believes that Hong Kong people can see through the malicious intention of the suspects including Benny Tai, realize the harm of their plot to Hong Kong society, and actively safeguard national security and the overall interests of Hong Kong, the spokesperson said.
Hong Kong has witnessed the turning point of returning to peace from chaos after the national security law took effect, the spokesperson said.
The reality has proved that only by fully and firmly implementing the national security law, can national security, Hong Kong's social stability and people's peaceful lives be effectively protected and the cause of "one country, two systems" remain steady and sustainable development, the spokesperson said.
