Wei Shaoxuan spearheads 16-archer training squad eligible for Tokyo 2020

The selected 16 archers will continue to compete for the final six seats to represent China in the Tokyo Olympics.

BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese national archery team on Wednesday announced its final training squad of 16 athletes who will compete for the six tickets for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The shortlist of eight men and eight women, was decided after a four-day competition in Sichuan that featured 20 players, 16 from the national team and four excelled from a nationwide selection.

Wei Shaoxuan, a member of the winning team that awarded China its first men's team gold at the 2019 World Championships, ranked first among the eight male athletes while Wu Jiaxin headed the eight women archers.

Among the qualified are London 2012 bronze medalist Dai Xiaoxiang, Olympian Wang Dapeng, Asian Games champion Zhang Xinyan and World Cup women's team champions An Qixuan and Zheng Yichai.

The 16 athletes will gather in a training camp until March, 2021 when the final six athletes, three male and three female, will be decided to represent China at the Tokyo Games.
