LONDON, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Britain's Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died at the age of 99, Buckingham Palace announced Friday.
"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," the palace said in a statement.
"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss," said the statement.
No official details have been announced yet about the funeral, but it is understood the Duke of Edinburgh will be given a royal ceremonial funeral rather than a state funeral according to his wishes, Sky News reported.
The Duke of Edinburgh left hospital last month after a month-long treatment. He underwent a procedure for a pre-existing heart condition, according to Buckingham Palace.
The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen. He was the longest-serving royal consort in British history. The couple had four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Enditem
