JERUSALEM, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Israel's military said on Thursday that it struck targets in Syria after a Syrian anti-aircraft missile hit southern Israel earlier in the day.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in Israel.

"Surface-to-air missile fire was identified from Syria," an Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the missile landed in the Negev Desert.

According to the military, the missile triggered sirens in Dimona, a southern town where Isreal's Negev Nuclear Research Center is located.

Shortly later, the Israel army struck the battery from which the missile was launched and additional surface-to-air batteries in the area, in an attack the army said was "a response" to the missile.

The Israeli army Spokesperson Hedi Zilberman said in a separate statement that the Syrians missile, aimmed at Israeli air force jets in the Syrian Golan, missed its target. Enditem
