LANZHOU, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Yellow River is China's second-longest waterway. It is also known as a "mother river" in the country.
Thirty-five years ago, a sculptor named He E designed a statue to express her deep love for the mother river. The statue, named "Yellow River -- the Mother", has become her masterpiece and a local resort along the riverside.
Chinese people live with the Yellow River in harmony, like the mother and the baby of the statue. This special bond has lasted for centuries. The bond will continue, as China aims high in its long-term plans, and the Yellow River, a cradle of Chinese civilization, is to be one of the main forces spearheading the country's high-quality development in a new era.
In the Yellow River basin, measures to promote high-quality development include strengthening water conservation in regions with important ecological functions, developing modern agriculture in major grain-producing regions and improving the quality of infrastructure and public service in poverty-stricken areas. With China adopting ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin as a major national strategy, the river is expected to play a crucial role in striking a balance between environmental protection and economic growth.
