KABUL, May 25 (Xinhua) -- A key divisional commander of the Taliban was killed in a clash with the government forces in Afghanistan's northern Faryab province on Monday night, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.
"Qari Jabar was killed during fightings with Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) in Qata Qeshlaq village, Khwaja Sabz Posh district in Faryab last night and another local Taliban leader Bashir alias Hamza was also wounded in the same clashes," the ministry said in a statement.
The two Taliban commanders were responsible for conducting scores of subversive and terrorist attacks in the district, where the provincial capital Maimana is located, according to the statement.
In the neighboring Jawzjan province, 27 Taliban militants were killed and 12 others wounded during the ongoing military operation in the Faizabad and Aqcha areas over the past three days, Hanif Rezai, spokesperson for the army's 209th Shaheen Corps based in the region, told Xinhua.
The ground forces were supported by the Afghan Air Force and the operation will continue in the areas to get rid of the militants, he said.
