ROME, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Italy notched a 1-0 win over Wales in Rome in the Euro 2020 Group A on Sunday evening, which saw the hosts through with three wins from three games without conceding a goal.

Matteo Pessina scored the only goal of the game for Italy in the 39th minute with a smart flick on Marco Verratti's free kick to deflect the ball in at the bar post.

Verratti was running midfield, with neither Daniel James nor Gareth Bale able to get involved for the Welsh, who failed to get a shot in target in the first half.

Federico Bernardeshi hit the post for Italy from a free kick early in the second half and Ethan Ampadu's late challenge of the striker in the 55th minute left Wales with 35 minutes left to play with 10 men.

The Italians kept the pace up for the rest of the half, but failed to find a second goal, while the Welsh had only one chance all game as Bale volleyed over after a free kick.

After the game, Italy and Wales both qualified for the knockout stages of the European Championships.

Elsewhere in the same group, a brace from Xherdan Shaqiri helped Switzerland to keep their last 16 hopes alive after easing past Turkey 3-1 at Baku Olympic Stadium.

The "Nati" secured a perfect start into their all-or-nothing clash as Haris Seferovic broke the deadlock with just six minutes gone.

Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer was busy for the remainder of the first half but still Vladimir Petkovic's men were able to make it 2-0 through Shaqiri at the half hour mark.

Resilient Turkey eventually halved the deficit after the restart when Irfan Can Kahveci at last overcame Sommer in the 62nd minute.

However, it was a short-lived joy for Turkey as clinical Switzerland showed no mercy and restored their two-goal lead after Shaqiri sealed his double strike six minutes later.

With the result, Switzerland must wait to find whether they have done enough for a last 16 ticket, while Turkey had to end their Euro 2020 campaign with zero points on the table.
