TOKYO, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Some Turkey women's volleyball team athletes are under soft quarantine in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Village, including their delegation's opening ceremony flag-bearer Eda Erdem Dundar, according to the Turkish Volleyball Federation (TVF).

Due to the COVID-19 positive case on the flight that the Turkey women's volleyball team took to Japan, the team's captain Erdem and several athletes have been put into soft quarantine. The TVF's announcement made on Thursday also noticed there is "close contact" among them.

Although the Turkish side is likely to be allowed to compete in its first Tokyo 2020 match against China, Erdem, who was appointed Turkey delegation's flag-bearer, will miss the opening ceremony.

"We are very sorry for this unfortunate incident that our dear captain Eda Erdem Dundar experienced," said Mehmet Akif Ustundag, President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation.

"But this situation will not demoralize us, we will represent our country in the best possible way," he added.

According to the Tokyo 2020 Playbook for athletes, decisions on whether "close contact" can attend the competition will be made on a case-by-case basis and will take into consideration the likelihood of the virus spreading.

The TVF's announcement also informed that the Turkey women's volleyball team still continued their training, had PCR tests every day, and settled in the Olympic Village without experiencing any adverse events. Enditem
