YICHANG, July 31 (Xinhua) -- A newly constructed bridge over the Yangtze River, China's longest, will be opened to traffic on August 2 in the city of Yichang, Central China's Hubei Province.
In order to make way for Chinese sturgeon, one of the endangered endemic species in the river, Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge was designed to be a suspension bridge of 1,160 meters long without a single pier in the river with the construction plan costing extra 100 million yuan.
As planned, the migration of the Chinese sturgeon will not be affected, and there will also be enough space for water flow of the Yangtze River after the completion of the bridge.
With a total investment of 2.8 billion yuan, Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge was built 15 kilometers downstream from the Gezhouba Dam, a major spawning ground for Chinese sturgeon. The precious finless porpoises and Chinese sucker fish also frequent the area.
Constructed by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd., Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge was built with a total length of 2,813 meters and a width of 31.5 meters, running two ways with six lanes each with a design speed of 80 km/h.
The bridge will cut the travel time within the central district of Yichang city, and further promote the integrated development of the Yangtze River Economic Zone.
