MAPUTO, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- President of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi inaugurated on Wednesday in Maputo a new power plant that will generate 106 megawatts of electric power using gas to reinforce energy supply in the southern region of the country.
Designed to meet 25 percent of the energy demand in the southern province of Maputo and the capital city, the plant is part of government's mobilization of resources in the last three years for projects aimed at expanding electric power access in the country.
"We are happy that the country is taking significant steps towards the universal access to electric power by 2030," said the president who expected the entities to reduce costs and speed up the process of operation.
Nyusi said that the new power plant indicated the government's commitment to the development of the country and well-being of its people.
"We are convinced that our capacity to grow in a sustainable manner is connected to the level of access to electric power," added the president.
Despite being home to one of the largest dams in the African continent and supplying regional countries such as Zimbabwe and South Africa, electric power coverage in Mozambique is low, with an estimate of 69.9 percent of the population not yet connected to the country's electric power grid.
