KAMPALA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's coffee export earnings reached a record 494 million U.S. dollars in the financial year that ended on June 30, ministry of finance figures showed on Monday.
The ministry said the year 2020 could see Uganda, already Africa's largest coffee exporter, overtaking Ethiopia as the continent's largest coffee producer.
Coffee is one of the 14 commodities identified by President Yoweri Museveni as critical to the economic transformation of Uganda in the wake of COVID-19.
Angola exported 5.06 million 60kg bags in 2019-2020, up from 3.5 million 60kg bags in 2016-2017. It aims export 20 million 60kg bags by 2025.
Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) said it is looking at new markets like China.
About 1.7 million households in Uganda depend on coffee production, according to the UCDA. Enditem
