ADDIS ABABA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia registered 1,739 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 227,255 as of Saturday evening, the country's Ministry of Health said.
The ministry said 35 new deaths from the coronavirus were reported across the country during the same period, bringing the national death toll to 3,146.
The East African country reported 1,093 more recoveries, taking the national count of COVID-19 recoveries to 169,038.
Ethiopia, Africa's second-most populous nation, has so far reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the East Africa region and the fourth most COVID-19 affected country in Africa in terms of positive cases.
According to the ministry, Ethiopia currently has some 55,069 active COVID-19 cases, of which 933 are said to be under severe health conditions.
The latest figures from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that Ethiopia's COVID-19 cases accounted for about five percent of the African continent's total confirmed cases.
Ethiopia is giving COVID-19 vaccine jabs after the country received its first 2.2 million COVID-19 vaccines from COVAX recently.
The East African country had last week received a batch of China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines that was donated by the Chinese government. Enditem
