BISSAU, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) announced on Monday in a statement that it recognizes the results of the presidential elections held in December 2019 in Guinea-Bissau and the defeat of its leader Domingos Simoes Pereira.

According to the PAIGC, all remedies have been tried after the Supreme Court of Justice examined the electoral dispute due to complaints filed by Domingos Simoes Pereira accusing irregularities in the final count results.

Regarding the last instance of electoral appeal, the PAIGC indicated that it could only accept the electoral verdict.

The PAIGC declared to reiterate "its acceptance of the verdict of the Supreme Court of Justice which validated the electoral results proclaimed by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) which declared the candidate Domingos Simoes Pereira as the unsuccessful candidate of the second round of the presidential elections of December 29, 2019".

The party had never accepted the final election results proclaimed by the NEC, which it accused of having committed irregularities in the final count of the results.

According to the NEC, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, candidate of the Movement for Democratic Alternation (MADEM-G15), was elected president of Bissau-Guinean with 53.55 percent of the votes, while the PAIGC candidate, Domingos Simoes Pereira, obtained 46.45 percent.

Embalo was sworn in at the end of February in 2020 without waiting for the validation of the results of the presidential election by the Supreme Court of Justice who demanded a verification of the vote count after the PAIGC had taken legal action.

Before the 2019 presidential election, Guinea-Bissau suffered for a long time from a political impasse on the appointment of a consensus Prime Minister under the leadership of former President of the Republic Jose Mario Vaz. The 2019 presidential elections were seen as a final solution to the country's political instability. Enditem
