GABORONE, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tumiso Rakgare, Minister of Botswana's Youth Empowerment, Sport, and Culture Development, congratulated the country's men's 4x400m relay team after they a bronze medal in the event at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday evening.
The team of Isaac Makwala, Baboloki Thebe, Zibani Ngozi, and Bayapo Ndori established a new African record and became the first African nation to win a medal in the 4x400m relay since 2004 with a time of 2 minutes and 57.27 seconds.
Team USA won the relay final in 2:55.70. The Netherlands came second with a new national record of 2:57.18.
This is also the second medal the southern African countries ever got in the Olympic Games.
