NEW DELHI, July 27 (Xinhua) -- India's rural unemployment rate rose for the second consecutive week and the urban job loss continues to remain high, data released by an economic research house, Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), said Monday.

As per the data available with the research house, the rural unemployment rate climbed to 7.66 percent in the week that ended on July 26 as against 7.10 percent reported in the week that ended on July 19.

The urban unemployment rate recorded in the week that ended on July 26 was 9.43 percent, against 9.78 recorded in the week that ended on July 19.

The national unemployment rate too inched up to 8.21 percent in the week ended on July 26 as against 7.94 percent in the week that ended on July 19.

Experts attribute the increase in unemployment percentage rate to slowing down of agricultural activity, which reduced the sector's capacity to absorb labor, and to the fresh lockdown announced by local governments in their respective states amid the spike in COVID-19 cases.

Economists say unlike June, the month of July has not recorded marked recovery in replacement of jobs or the creation of new ones. Enditem
