NEW DELHI, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 155 fatalities among healthcare workers due to COVID-19 were recorded across India, the government said on Tuesday.

These include 64 doctors, 32 Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM)/Multipurpose Health Worker (MHW), 14 Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers and 45 others.

The details were given by India's junior minister for health and family welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey in a written reply to parliament.

According to Choubey, these victims were granted relief under the prime minister's welfare insurance package.

In July, a paper written by Rajeev Jayadevan, president of the Indian Medical Association Cochin, revealed that 104 doctors have died due to COVID-19-related complications until July 13 across the country. Another four deaths of doctors - three of them in road accidents - were also linked to COVID-19, taking the death toll to 108.

Most of the doctors who died were below 60 years of age and a majority of them were general practitioners, Jayadevan said in his paper.

India continues to be in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday morning 83,809 new COVID-19 cases and 1,054 related deaths were recorded in the country during the past 24 hours, which has pushed the country's COVID-19 tally to 4,930,236 including 80,776 deaths.

Globally India is the second worst-hit country due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Enditem
