NUR-SULTAN, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- About 330,000 birds in poultry farms have been killed in Kazakhstan due to highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu in seven regions across the country, the agriculture ministry announced on Thursday.
More than 1.7 million birds have been vaccinated in 424 rural districts in Kazakhstan, said the ministry, adding that 7.7 million doses of vaccines have been distributed to the bird flu-hit regions.
Due to strict quarantine measures, the bird flu outbreak has been relatively curbed in the regions of Turkestan, Zhambyl, Aktobe and Karaganda as well as the city of Shymkent, according to the ministry.
The region of North Kazakhstan, which borders Russia, reported the country's first bird flu outbreak in early September.
Earlier the Kazakh agriculture ministry said wild birds from Russia, where bird flu cases were found from August in the Omsk and Chelyabinsk oblasts, may transmit the virus to Kazakhstan. Enditem
