TASHKENT, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan has introduced new digital technologies in its prisons and is currently considering allowing inmates to enroll in universities and study online, an Uzbek police official said Friday.
The draft document, allowing university enrollment and online study, including continued study from prison, has been sent to the government for approval, Jamshid Sultanov, deputy head of the Main Department for the Execution of Punishments of the Interior Ministry, told a press conference.
"All penitentiary institutions were equipped with fiber-optic communication to ensure communication between the prisoners and their relatives via video links," Sultanov said.
To increase the transparency of the system and eliminate the possibility of ill-treatment of prisoners, guards are provided with personal body cameras, he said.
Uzbekistan has reformed its prison system in recent years to allow inmates convicted for minor crimes to vote in elections and receive pensions and social insurance payments. Enditem
