Bangladesh's forex reserves reach over 45 bln USD in May

DHAKA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves reached over 45 billion U.S. dollars by the end of May, Bangladesh's Finance Ministry spokesman has said.

Gazi Towhidul Islam, Bangladesh's Finance Ministry spokesman, told Xinhua Tuesday night that the country's foreign exchange reserves stood at 45,054 million U.S. dollars on May 31 compared with 44,950 million U.S. dollars on April 30.

For a growing economy like Bangladesh, forex reserves equivalent to six months' import bills are considered adequate.

With the existing reserves, trade analysts here say Bangladesh is in a position to pay nearly 10 months' import bills.

Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves crossed the 45-billion-U.S. dollar for the first time in May this year amid a boom in inflow of remittances which reached nearly 22.84 billion U.S. dollars dollars last month.

In the backdrop of healthy fund of greenbacks, the central bank of Bangladesh has recently decided in principle to lend 200-250 million U.S. dollars from it's reserves to Sri Lanka for three months, senior Bangladesh Bank official Sirajul Islam said recently. Enditem
