LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- A total of 40 militants including a key Taliban commander were killed as fighting planes struck a Taliban gathering in Lashkar Gah, capital of Afghanistan's Helmand province on Thursday, an army statement released here said Friday.
Mawlawi Mubarak, a commander of the so-called Red Army unit of the Taliban, were killed in the air raids launched at 22:48 p.m. local time Thursday, the statement said.
Major city Lashkar Gah in southern Afghanistan has been the scene of fierce fighting over the past couple of weeks.
Government forces have launched cleanup operations in Lashkar Gah, as Taliban militants reportedly controlled major parts of Helmand province. Enditem
