COLOMBO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's wildlife authorities said Tuesday that a pair of twin baby elephants were born at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage outside the central hills of Kandy in the Central Province.
A spokesman from the orphanage said the twin elephants were born to a female elephant named "Surangi," local media reported.
Both the baby elephants were males.
The spokesman said the first baby elephant was born at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday and the second was born at 12:00 p.m. the same day.
A senior official of the Wild life Department said the twin elephant birth was the first such birth in Sri Lanka's history among the country's registered domesticated elephants.
