ISLAMABAD, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's eastern Punjab province reported 223 more dengue fever cases during the last 24 hours, sparking fears of an outbreak in the region, an official said on Thursday.

Secretary of the Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department of Punjab Imran Sikandar told media that out of the 223 dengue fever cases, 167 infections in the province were reported from the provincial capital of Lahore.

At least 35 cases were reported from Rawalpindi, the neighboring district to the federal capital Islamabad.

The official said that the health department has been conducting operations across the province to eradicate dengue larvae.

Pakistani capital Islamabad has also been facing an increasing number of infections and at least three patients have died of the disease during the last two weeks, local media reported Thursday. Enditem
