WARSAW, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Heavy downpours have caused flash floods in Warsaw on Monday evening, with over 300 cases of flooded cellars, garages, as well as underground stations and tunnels, having been reported.

Sudden heavy rains started late afternoon during rush hour, sending down large volumes of water in a short time.

Scenes of city buses and passenger cars wading through water appeared on social media and news outlets. Public transport was partly paralyzed and traffic queues were longer than usual in the Polish capital.

Also affected were government buildings located at flooded streets and squares in the city.

Speaking to the news website Wirtualna Polska, one city official described the scene as the biblical "Armageddon."

"Practically every space below ground level is threatened (by the flooding)," Wojciech Kapczynski of the Warsaw division of the National Fire Brigade told the news service. Exact damages have yet to be assessed. Enditem
