SOFIA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian law enforcement officers in the port city of Burgas have captured more than 13 million smuggled cigarettes destined for Hungary, authorities said Tuesday.
The illegal shipment was found in a semi-trailer that arrived by ferry from Georgia on Sunday, the National Customs Agency (NCA) and the country's Prosecutor's Office said in a joint statement.
The 651,062 cigarette packs were from two brands unknown in the Bulgarian market, the statement said, adding the shipment had to be transported by truck to Hungary.
The total value of the seized cigarettes is about three million U.S. dollars, the statement said.
Due to its location, Bulgaria is a favorite destination for traffickers, with 16.1 million illegal cigarettes seized by the NCA in 2020. Enditem
