"Shazam!" wins North American box office for second weekend in a row

LOS ANGELES, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros.' superhero film "Shazam!" continues to play a successful box office tune with 25.14 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend performance and has earned 94.91 million dollars in North America through Sunday.

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, "Shazam!" is the seventh installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film is directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Zachary Levi in the title role. By shouting out one word --SHAZAM!-- a streetwise 14-year-old can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam courtesy of an ancient wizard.

The film took in an estimated 35.9 million dollars from 79 overseas markets this weekend for a worldwide total of 258.8 million dollars, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

Universal's fantasy comedy "Little" opened in second place with an estimated 15.5 million dollars in its debut. Directed by Tina Gordon, the film stars Regina Hall, Issa Rae, and Marsai Martin, the plot follows an overbearing tech mogul who is transformed into the 13-year-old version of herself.

Another newcomer, Lionsgate's supernatural superhero film "Hellboy" opened in third place with an estimated 12.01 million dollars this weekend. Based on the Dark Horse Comics character of the same name, it's a reboot of the Hellboy film series. Directed by Neil Marshall, the film stars David Harbour in the title role.

Paramount's horror film "Pet Sematary" landed in fourth place with an estimated 10 million dollars in its second weekend for a North American total of 41.12 million dollars. The film is the second adaptation of the novel of the same name by American writer Stephen King. Directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, the film stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lithgow. The plot follows a family which moves to a small town and discovers a mysterious graveyard in the woods behind their new home.

Disney's fantasy adventure film "Dumbo" finished fifth in its third weekend with an estimated 9.18 million dollars, pushing its North American total to 89.94 million dollars for a global total of 266.9 million dollars through Sunday. Directed by Tim Burton, the film is the live action remake of Disney's 1941 classic animated film of the same name.
