The Shanghai Kunju Opera was established in spring in 1978 and now is 19 years old. Members of the troupe are outstanding graduates from the Shanghai Opera School who majored in Kunju Opera, Kunju Music and Kunju Dance Choreography.

Over the almost 20 years, the troupe has achieved much, rehearsing around 40 big shows and 250 small shows. Seven of the members won the "Plum Blossom Award" which is the highest award in traditional opera performance and also seven members won the "Magnolia Award", considered and honorable award to performing artists in Shanghai.The troupe also has nine national A level artists. Due to all these, it was honored to be a national level art troupe that has the best cast and best repertoire. Apart from great amounts of performances in China, it is often invited to give shows in the US, Japan, Singapore, European countries, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
