Lying
in Jiangsu Province of China, Suzhou is among the first
wave of famous historical and cultural cities open to
the outside world. Popularly called as "a land of
plenty" and "a home of silk", it is a key
tourist city of China and a favorite spot for investors
at home and abroad.
Located in the subtropical monsoon zone, it is mild
and humid in Suzhou. It has an area of 8,488 square
kilometers, 15 times that of Singapore, and a population
of 5,750,000. There are altogether six districts in
Suzhou. They are: Pingjiang, Changlang, Jinchang, the
Suburban District, the Sino-Singapore Suzhou Industrial
Park and Suzhou Hi-tech Development Zone. There are
six major cities in the county: Changshu, Zhangjiagang,
Kunshan, Taichang, Wuxian and Wujiang. Suzhou is one
of the key cities planned and constructed in China.
Suzhou is an important hub of communications in the
coastal areas of China. The Shanghai-Nanjing Railway
transverses from east to west and the Beijing-Hangzhou
Great Canal flows from north to south. The rivers and
the lakes are interwoven. The Yangtse River and the
sea are connected together. Suzhou is very close to
Shanghai and is only one hour's drive to Shanghai Rainbow
Bridge International Airport. The Shanghai-Nanjing Freeway
cuts through the area; the No. 312, No. 204 and No.
318 National Highways intersect here; and the construction
of harbors has already been completed to a large scale.
A multi-level communication system by water, land and
air has come into being in Suzhou.
