Siwen Lane, located on Xinzha Road, was built in 1916. The old style "stone-arched gate" residences can be regarded as the typical example of the popular residential constructions at that time in Shanghai much influenced by colonialism. The main lane of this sort of lane residences contains many sub-lanes which are in traverse rows. The black-lacquered door, delicate brick sculptures, rooms and courtyard within the brick-and-wood constructions strongly express the "Shanghai style" in architecture.
