Future Objectives
Since
the city was liberated from under the KMT rule in 1949
and particularly after the country adopted the policy
of reform and opening to the outside world 20 years,
Shanghai a metropolis in the East has undergone historic
and dramatic changes. Its development in the past decades
has not only enhanced the city's strength, but also
laid a solid foundation for its pursuing of the status
of a world economic centre in the coming 21th century.
Facing the opportunities and challenges of the 21st
century, Shanghai has already mapped out its long-term
strategic programme for social and economic development.
By 2010, Shanghai shall initially become one of the
economic, financial and trade centres in the world and
Pudong shall initially become a world market-oriented,
multi-functional and modern new area of the top international
class and emerge as a new and key international economic
city.
