Livelihood of the people

In 1997, the total number of the staff & workers in our city amounted 936,900. The total salary was 792.3 million yuan and the average annual salary was 8,443 yuan, showing 7.7% and 9.1% increase against the year before respectively. The average dispoable income of the urban people was 7,479 yuan and the average net income of the rural people was 4,924 yuan, presenting 13.5% and7.7% increase against the year before respectively. The total saving deposits of the urban and rural people of the whole city amounted 53,378m yuan, an increase of 30.7% against 1996. The annual housing area of the urban people totaled 13.9 square metres and most of the rural people have moved into multi-storey buildings.   The social welfare projects have got continuous development. Altogether there are 194 welfare institutions and geracomiums, taking in as many as 4,496 people.

The social security system framework begins to take shape, including security for the provision for the aged, unemployment, medical treatment, industrial injuries, and child-bearing. Altogether 690,600 staff & workers effected endowment insurance and 235,000 health insurance. The system of employment & reemployment is moving towards a stage of diversified channels, forms and levels. During 1997, 25,700 people have got reemployed, among whom those in urban area counted 8,600. The registered rate of unemployment was 1.7%, in which the city proper accounted 2.5%. 23,000 laid-off workers have been reemployed through various channels and the city totaled 11,000.
